Hyderabad recently came alive with profound devotion and joyous celebration for the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the esteemed first Sikh Guru and founder of Sikhism. The festivities commenced with a spectacular Nagar Keertan, a holy procession, originating from Gurudwara Saheb in Secunderabad. At its heart, the revered holy scripture, Guru Granth Sahib, was carried on a beautifully adorned vehicle, accompanied by captivating demonstrations of Gatka, the traditional Sikh martial art, as the procession gracefully moved through the city’s charming bylanes.
Leading the vibrant procession were bright yellow palanquins, glowing like luminous umbrellas. The air was filled with shimmering lights, the rhythmic beating of drums, and soul-stirring chants, creating an atmosphere that was both festive and deeply spiritual. Throughout the route, dedicated volunteers generously distributed water, snacks, and langar (community food) from trolleys and vehicles, ensuring everyone felt welcome. Devotees and curious onlookers alike joined in, eager to receive blessings as the procession gracefully wound its way through the bustling heart of Secunderabad.
Adding an exhilarating touch to the event, Sikh youths from both Punjab and Hyderabad captivated the crowds with their breathtaking Gatka performances. They showcased incredible agility and disciplined skill, expertly wielding traditional weapons like swords, much to the delight of all who watched.
This grand procession, a highlight of the ongoing Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrations, started its journey from Gurudwara Saheb in Secunderabad. It meandered through iconic city landmarks including Manohar Talkies, Clock Tower, BATA, Patny Circle, Kingsway, Monda Market, and Alpha Hotel, before returning to the Gurudwara in the evening. Enhancing the spiritual experience, LED screens mounted on vehicles displayed illuminating scenes from Guru Nanak Devji’s life and profound teachings, adding a reflective layer to the spirited event.
The celebrations continue with a second Nagar Keertan planned for November 3 (Monday), setting off from Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Afzalgunj. This procession will follow a route through Afzalgunj, Siddiamber Bazar, Jambagh, Putlibowli, and the Central Gurudwara Saheb in Gowliguda, concluding back at Gurudwara Singh Sabha, Afzalgunj, around 9 p.m. Thousands of devotees from across Telangana and neighboring states are eagerly anticipated to join this significant event.
The grand finale, a mass congregation, is scheduled for November 5 at the Exhibition Grounds in Nampally, running from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., promising a powerful and unifying conclusion to the festivities.
