Heavy rains have caused a significant disruption to Hyderabad’s drinking water supply, after the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board’s (HMWS&SB) water treatment plant at the Peddapur pump station in Sangareddy was completely submerged on Saturday. This essential plant, part of the Manjeera scheme, provides a substantial portion of the city’s water.
As a direct consequence of the flooding, numerous areas across Hyderabad will experience considerable interruptions to their regular water supply. The Board is actively working to implement alternative arrangements to mitigate the impact.
HMWS&SB chief K. Ashok Reddy, who personally visited and inspected the damaged facility, confirmed that the Phase 3 pump at Peddapur, which contributes 34 million gallons per day (mgd) to Hyderabad’s supply, is currently non-operational. The inundation resulted from an intense and unexpected downpour, with the region recording approximately 120mm of rainfall in a short timeframe. This rapid precipitation caused the Thogarpally stream to overflow its banks, quickly engulfing both the Phase 3 pump house and its associated substation.
Mr. Reddy outlined the immediate plan, which involves first pumping out the floodwaters from the facility. Subsequently, the affected pumps will be carefully uninstalled, disassembled, and transported for urgent repairs. The primary objective is to resume pumping operations as swiftly as possible.
Officials emphasized that the restoration efforts are being executed with utmost urgency, aiming to normalize operations within a 48-hour window. Reddy was accompanied by Technical Director Mr. Sudarshan, CGM (Transmission) Brijesh, and other Electrical department officials, who were all present to assess the situation and coordinate the critical recovery procedures.
