Hyderabad is currently grappling with the aftermath of relentless heavy rainfall, with more showers anticipated. This led local authorities on Friday afternoon, September 26, 2025, to open the gates of the city’s two crucial reservoirs: Himayatsagar and Osman Sagar. Consequently, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has safely evacuated 55 residents from areas vulnerable to flooding, particularly those located near the Chaderghat Bridge.
The water levels in both reservoirs have reached critical thresholds. Osman Sagar, with a full tank level (FTL) of 1790.00 feet (3.900 TMC), currently stands at 1789.50 feet (3.785 TMC). To manage the surge, ten of its gates have been lifted to a height of 6 feet, resulting in an outflow of 6,370 Cusecs. Similarly, Himayatsagar’s water level measured 1763.00 feet (2.781 TMC), just shy of its FTL of 1763.50 feet (2.970 TMC). Four gates of this reservoir were opened, releasing 4,069 Cusecs. The combined discharge from both reservoirs now exceeds an astonishing 10,400 Cusecs, according to data from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB).
The residents displaced by the rising waters, which include numerous families and daily wage earners, have found temporary refuge at a GHMC Community Hall. Here, they are receiving essential support, including shelter, meals, and medical assistance. R.V. Karnan, the GHMC Commissioner, is closely overseeing the situation and has issued directives for all officials to maintain a heightened state of alert. This proactive approach aims to ensure swift and effective responses, preventing any further unfortunate incidents, as detailed in a recent press statement.
