Himachal Pradesh CM Pushes for Modern Weather Systems to Combat Rising Natural Disasters

Himachal Pradesh, with its delicate geological makeup and increasing vulnerability to global warming and climate change, has seen a worrying increase in natural disasters lately. This concerning trend has led the State government to make an urgent appeal to the Centre: deploy at least 150 automated weather stations throughout the hilly region before the next monsoon season.

During a recent meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met with Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh. During their discussion, CM Sukhu specifically requested the provision of one Doppler weather radar and a sufficient number of automated weather stations—ideally 150—to significantly improve the state’s ability to issue swift and precise warnings for impending natural calamities.

Battling a Surge in Natural Disasters

According to an official statement, Mr. Sukhu emphasized, “Himachal Pradesh’s unique geological position, combined with the pressing challenges of global warming and climate change, has unfortunately resulted in an alarming escalation of natural disasters. The state has incurred substantial losses from these frequent and severe events.”

He further stressed the importance of integrating all weather-related data with established Central national early warning agencies. This crucial step would enable Himachal Pradesh to receive more accurate and timely alerts regarding adverse weather, thereby enhancing its protective measures.

The Crucial Need for a Seismic Laboratory

CM Sukhu also made a strong case for establishing a dedicated seismic laboratory and a data analysis center within the Kangra-Hamirpur zone. This region is critically situated in Seismic Zone 5, making it highly susceptible to earthquakes. He reiterated, “Given the escalating frequency of natural disasters in Himachal Pradesh over recent years, it is imperative that we implement a cutting-edge warning, data monitoring, and analysis system.”

Beyond disaster preparedness, the meeting also included extensive discussions on promoting natural farming practices in Himachal Pradesh, alongside strategies for sustainable land management and the development of smart agricultural techniques powered by renewable energy, the statement concluded.
