In a dramatic incident off the Goa coast early on Sunday, a fishing trawler capsized, triggering a swift and successful rescue operation that saved all 27 fishermen onboard. The ordeal began around 1:30 AM near Mobor beach in South Goa district when the distressed crew managed to call the police control room for help.
Responding immediately, a dedicated team comprising coastal police, state-appointed lifeguards, and courageous local fishermen launched a coordinated effort. Utilizing jet-skis and their intimate knowledge of the waters, they worked tirelessly to bring everyone safely back to shore.
Miraculously, all 27 fishermen were rescued without requiring any medical attention. “They are safe and sound,” a senior police official confirmed, highlighting the efficiency of the collaborative rescue.
A key figure in this heroic effort was Francis Fernandes, affectionately known as ‘Pele’. Renowned for his water sports business in South Goa, Pele gained public attention years ago for demonstrating traditional fishing techniques to none other than cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, proving his deep connection to the sea and its people.
The successful rescue comes amidst a ‘yellow alert’ issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which predicts heavy rainfall across Goa until October 1. Fishermen have been strongly advised to avoid venturing into the sea during this period due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions.
