Get ready for some serious rain, Kerala! The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange alert’ for four northern districts – Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod – signaling a period of very heavy rainfall for Thursday, October 23, 2025.
Adding to the cautious forecast, a ‘yellow alert’ has also been declared for all other districts across the state, indicating that isolated heavy downpours are highly probable over the next 24 hours.
In the 24-hour period concluding at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Quilandi station in Kozhikode recorded a remarkable 14 cm of rainfall. Other areas also experienced significant precipitation, with Irinjalakuda in Thrissur receiving 9 cm, and Vellanikkara in Thrissur, Ernakulam South, Thrithala in Palakkad, and Angadipuram in Malappuram each reporting 7 cm of rain.
Behind the Downpour: Dual Weather Systems
This widespread rainfall across Kerala is being triggered by a confluence of two active weather systems positioned over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
Forecasters indicate that the system brewing over the Bay of Bengal is expected to track towards the coasts of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh on Thursday. Meanwhile, the depression currently over the Arabian Sea is gradually moving away from Kerala’s coastline, though its influence is still being felt.
