Hathras Case Update: Two Released from Jail, SHO and Inspector Suspended Amidst Allegations of Fake Encounter

Reading Time: 3 min

In a significant development from Hathras, two young men who were previously arrested in connection with a robbery attempt and an alleged fake encounter have been released from jail. Officials confirmed the release on Saturday, stating that it was due to ‘shortcomings found during an inquiry’ into the case.

As a consequence of the findings, two police officers, including the Station House Officer (SHO) and the Inspector in charge of the Anti-Theft Team, have been suspended for negligence. A magisterial inquiry into the matter is currently underway, being conducted by Sadar SDM Rajbahadur Singh and Circle Officer Yogendra Krishna Narayan.

The incident dates back to October 9, when a robbery attempt was reported at a trader’s residence in the Mursan police station area. Following the complaint, the police claimed to have apprehended two individuals after a brief encounter, during which one of them sustained a leg injury. The arrested men were identified as Omveer alias Sonu and Deva alias Suryadev Singh, both hailing from Barakala village in Aligarh’s Iglas area.

However, the families of the accused contested the police’s account, alleging that the encounter was staged and calling for a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible. They escalated their demands by meeting with the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police.

Based on initial findings, SP Chiranjeev Nath Sinha took immediate action, suspending the then SHO, Mamta Singh, and Inspector Mukesh Kumar. The investigation was subsequently handed over to the SDM and Circle Officer.

Initially, the police had reported the recovery of two country-made pistols, three live cartridges, and a motorcycle from the arrested men. However, a subsequent detailed probe by investigators reportedly found no substantial evidence against the duo. Consequently, a final report was submitted to the court, paving the way for their release on Friday.

The Circle Officer City further clarified that the youths were released due to identified procedural shortcomings during the inquiry. The SP corroborated this, confirming the lack of concrete evidence against the arrested individuals in the cases filed by both the trader and the police, which led to the filing of the final report and their subsequent release.
