Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis recently conveyed Greece’s strong backing for the swift conclusion of a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement between India and the European Union. This significant declaration came during a productive phone conversation with his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi.
During their discussion, Prime Ministers Modi and Mitsotakis comprehensively reviewed the robust bilateral relationship between India and Greece, focusing on key sectors such as trade, investment, and defense cooperation.
An official Indian statement highlighted that both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress in various aspects of their bilateral ties, including technology, shipping, security, connectivity, and cultural exchanges. They reiterated their unwavering commitment to further strengthening the India-Greece strategic partnership.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis also extended Greece’s full support for the successful organization of the upcoming AI Impact Summit, which India is scheduled to host in 2026. The telephone call was initiated by the Greek leader.
The 13th round of negotiations for the India-EU Free Trade Agreement took place in New Delhi just last week. The European Union stands as India’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade in goods reaching an impressive $135 billion in the financial year 2023-24.
Significant headway has already been made in these negotiations, with both parties successfully concluding discussions on eleven chapters. These include crucial areas such as customs and trade facilitation, dispute settlement mechanisms, digital trade, developing sustainable food systems, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, ensuring fair competition and managing subsidies, and facilitating capital movements.
Additionally, the Greek Prime Minister extended his warm birthday wishes to Prime Minister Modi on September 17th, a gesture for which Mr. Modi expressed his sincere appreciation, as noted by the Ministry of External Affairs.
