A devastating incident has occurred in Greater Noida, where a 20-year-old Dalit youth, Aniket Jatav, has tragically died at a Delhi hospital. He had been attacked on the night of October 15, his birthday, during a celebration outside his home in the Rabupura area. Police have arrested two individuals, identified as Yuvraj and Jitu, in connection with the assault, while efforts are underway to apprehend other suspects.
The community of Mohalla Ambedkar in Greater Noida was plunged into grief and tension as Aniket’s body was returned home under heavy police presence. A prolonged negotiation with the family, who sought justice for Aniket, preceded the cremation.
Aniket, who worked as a mechanic and driver, was allegedly targeted by upper-caste individuals. His uncle, Sumit, recounted the horrific events, stating that the attackers arrived just as Aniket was celebrating his birthday. Sumit also reported being assaulted during the incident, sustaining a swollen eye.
The attack stemmed from escalating tensions that reportedly began a month prior when Aniket intervened in an altercation where Thakur men were allegedly abusing a friend. This led to casteist slurs and retaliatory actions, including Aniket slapping one of the accused, who then reminded him of his ‘aukat’ (status). The situation culminated in the violent assault on Aniket’s birthday.
Politicians from various parties visited the family to offer condolences. Jewar MLA Dhirendra Singh of the BJP confirmed that the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister had assured strict action.
The opposition has vehemently criticized the government’s handling of caste violence. Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed condemned the incident, stating that the ruling government has failed to protect Dalit lives, quoting the attackers’ words: “Tera aukat kya hai [what is your status]?”
The police have registered an FIR and are investigating allegations of caste abuse, with a case filed under the SC/ST Act. The victim’s mother expressed profound grief and a demand for justice, stating, “We don’t want money. We don’t want a job. We want blood for blood.”
