Maachana Raghunandan, a dedicated Deputy Tahsildar in Telangana’s Consumer Affairs, Food, and Civil Supplies department, has received the prestigious ‘National Tobacco Control Hero Award.’ This honor, presented by the Strategic Institute of Public Health and Research (SIPHER), acknowledges his remarkable two-decade-long commitment to eradicating tobacco addiction across the state.
SIPHER specifically sought out seasoned individuals with over 15 years of experience in tobacco control, and Mr. Raghunandan’s name stood out. The institute lauded his unwavering dedication and impactful grassroots efforts in combating this widespread health issue.
Mr. Raghunandan’s passionate journey began in 2000, tragically sparked by the loss of his dear friend, Deekshitulu, to smoking and gutkha addiction. This profound grief fueled a lifelong vow to prevent others from suffering the same fate. His commitment was so deep that he famously declared at his own wedding, ‘I don’t seek smokers’ blessings.’ For years, he tirelessly spearheaded his ‘Quit Tobacco’ campaign, traversing more than 5,000 kilometers on his two-wheeler to reach over 500 villages, spreading awareness and hope.
