Karnataka’s ambitious vision for a ‘Quantum City’ in Bengaluru is rapidly gaining international traction, with leading Swiss companies and research institutions expressing strong interest in forming partnerships. This exciting development was announced by Minister N.S. Boseraju, who oversees Minor Irrigation, Science, and Technology.
Speaking at a press conference on October 29, 2025, Minister Boseraju highlighted Karnataka’s proactive steps to position Bengaluru as a premier global hub for quantum technology. Following the landmark first Quantum Conference in India, the State government has already secured and allocated the necessary land for this groundbreaking project.
Attracting Global Investment and Talent
During his recent visit to Switzerland, Minister Boseraju engaged in productive discussions with representatives from top global quantum research institutions, including the prestigious ETH Zurich and CERN. He underscored Karnataka’s commitment to building a robust quantum ecosystem, citing ongoing collaborations with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to cultivate a highly skilled quantum workforce. The state boasts abundant expert talent and an ideal environment for pioneering new research.
Dr. Michael Hengartner, President of the ETH Zurich Board, warmly received Karnataka’s proposal for collaborative research projects, signaling a promising future for joint innovation.
The Karnataka delegation actively participated in the ‘Swissnex Quantum Summit,’ where they presented compelling investment opportunities to major international quantum companies. A detailed demonstration of the proposed Quantum City further highlighted its potential and strategic advantages.
The delegation also had the opportunity to visit ETH Zurich, an esteemed institution with historical ties to Albert Einstein’s groundbreaking work. During their visit, Minister Boseraju extended an invitation to the world-renowned directors of the ETH Zurich Quantum Center – Prof. Andreas Wallraff, Prof. Jonathan Home, and Prof. Klaus Ensslin – all distinguished pioneers in superconducting qubits and trapped ion systems research, to attend the forthcoming Quantum India Conference.
ETH Zurich University to Boost Quantum Talent in Karnataka
The Minister observed how many innovative research projects at ETH Zurich University’s labs have successfully transitioned into thriving startups. He was pleased to report a positive response from Swiss counterparts regarding the potential to replicate a similar entrepreneurial ecosystem within Karnataka’s Quantum City, eagerly anticipating future collaborations.
Furthermore, the delegation visited Zurich Instruments, gaining valuable insights into the manufacturing of critical equipment for quantum computing. The Minister proudly announced that Zurich Instruments has committed to providing specialized training to research students from Karnataka, further enriching the state’s talent pool.
