Get ready for a football fiesta, India! Kochi is all set to host a spectacular international friendly on November 17, featuring none other than Lionel Messi and his World Cup-winning Argentina squad, who will go head-to-head with Australia.
But that’s not all! India might witness even more top-tier football. Anto Augustine, the managing director of Reporter Broadcasting Company, which is sponsoring the event, revealed to us that discussions are underway for Australia to play a second international friendly in Kochi. “We’re working hard to secure a strong opponent for Australia, and Iran is one of the teams we’re considering,” he shared, adding that a final confirmation is expected in a few days.
Augustine firmly put to rest any circulating rumors regarding Messi’s absence or a potential change in the match venue. “I’ve seen reports suggesting the Argentina match might be played in Africa, not India. Let me assure everyone that Messi will absolutely be playing, and it is indeed the full World Cup-winning squad of Argentina that is coming to India,” he emphasized.
The Argentine team is scheduled to arrive in Kochi on November 15, with the Australian contingent landing five days earlier, on November 10. The Australian team will also be accompanied by a delegation from their government, highlighting the significance of the event.
This high-profile match is set to capture global attention, with plans to televise it to audiences worldwide. “We are in the final stages of securing television rights, and a prominent Indian sports channel will be broadcasting the match live,” Augustine confirmed.
To build excitement, a grand roadshow will kick off on October 14 in Kozhikode, traversing all 14 districts of Kerala. Fans can also look forward to a special music show featuring the renowned artist A.R. Rahman.
Mark your calendars: tickets for this thrilling encounter will go on sale starting October 18!
