Prepare to be enchanted as Kannur city transforms into a spectacle of lights, music, and dance! The much-awaited Kannur Dussehra, often hailed as the “second Dussehra” after the iconic Mysuru celebration, kicks off at the Collectorate ground on Tuesday, September 23. This grand nine-day festival, meticulously organized by the Kannur Corporation and running until October 1, promises an exhilarating fusion of rich cultural performances, enticing shopping opportunities, and spectacular mega shows, cementing its status as a must-attend annual event.
Embodying its heartwarming slogan, ‘Let’s share love, let’s join Dussehra,’ the festival aims to foster unity and joy among all communities. Adding to the excitement is an extended shopping festival, which began on August 25 and runs through October 10. Shoppers stand a chance to win incredible prizes, including a Baleno car, scooters, smartphones, and various gift vouchers, all thanks to the enthusiastic backing of local traders.
The festivities officially commence at 5 p.m. on Tuesday with an inauguration ceremony led by MP K. Sudhakaran, alongside actor Unniraj Cheruvathur as the esteemed guest of honor. Each of the ensuing nine evenings will burst into life with engaging cultural conferences, mesmerizing traditional folk performances, and captivating modern fusions.
Among the many highlights, attendees can look forward to soulful music compositions by Kalabhavan Dilnaraj, a powerful Kalaripayattu display by Ganesh Kalari, elegant Bharatanatyam recitals from Vidyalakshmi Kalakshetra, and an energetic performance by the Almaram Music band. The daily lineup beautifully blends classical and contemporary artistry, featuring traditional forms like Thiruvathirakali by SPACE Kannur and Oppana by Anjali Pallipuram, alongside exciting semi-classical fusions, vibrant Dandiya, and graceful Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi performances by emerging artists.
The star-studded roster continues with performances by the beloved Chemmeen band (featuring senior artists), a spectacular folk mega show by Renju Chalakudy, and a dynamic live rap performance from Fejo and ADT. Evenings will also feature enchanting Sufi music nights with Kollam Shafi and Rehna, and the soul-stirring ‘Songs of Soul and Soil’ by Binsi and Imam. Audiences can also enjoy a Ganamela by Ajay Gopal, the elegant Asha Nadanam led by Asha Sharath, and an electrifying mega show by Aviyal Band.
Beyond the stages, Kannur will be aglow with breathtaking festive decorations. Local traders and residents are invited to participate in a friendly competition for the best illuminations in their shops and public areas, promising to transform the entire city into a dazzling ‘world of light’ for all to enjoy.
Mayor Musliah Madathil emphasized that the festival has been thoughtfully curated to appeal to every segment of society, skillfully weaving together cherished traditional art forms with captivating popular entertainment.
