Gavi, a mesmerizing ecotourism destination nestled within Kerala’s lush Periyar Tiger Reserve, has become an unexpected financial powerhouse for the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). This captivating region, known for its pristine trekking trails, rich wildlife, and serene camping spots, has generated remarkable revenue for the corporation’s budget tourism wing.
Since its launch in November 2021, KSRTC’s budget tourism initiative, which offers affordable and meticulously organized tour packages across Kerala and beyond, has seen Gavi emerge as its undisputed star. This single destination has contributed an impressive ₹10.6 crore to the cash-strapped KSRTC, far surpassing other popular spots like Munnar (₹9.11 crore), Malakkappara (₹4.35 crore), and Vagamon (₹3.67 crore).
Gavi’s Cinematic Boost
Gavi’s allure received a significant boost from the 2012 Malayalam film “Ordinary,” which prominently featured the destination and a KSRTC bus. Directed by Sugeeth, the movie showcased Gavi’s enchanting forests and the picturesque road to the top station, flanked by sprawling tea plantations, offering viewers a glimpse into this refreshing travel experience. This cinematic exposure undoubtedly played a role in attracting more visitors.
KSRTC’s chief traffic officer highlights a consistent demand for ecotourism experiences in the Western Ghats, drawing tourists from both urban and rural areas throughout the year. The corporation currently operates an impressive 60 trips to Gavi each month, making it their most frequented destination.
Beyond Ecotourism: Pilgrimage Journeys
In addition to its thriving ecotourism offerings, KSRTC’s seasonal pilgrimage packages have also gained considerable popularity. These include the Nalambalam pilgrimage, a unique one-day journey during the month of Karkkidakam to four temples dedicated to Lord Rama and his brothers (Bharatha, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna), and the Panja Pandava pilgrimage, which takes devotees to five ancient Vishnu temples believed to have been established by the Pandava brothers from the epic Mahabharata. The Thiruvairanikulam pilgrimage and similar spiritual tours are also experiencing high demand.
Looking ahead, KSRTC plans to expand its pilgrimage portfolio by introducing packages to renowned temples in neighboring states, such as those in Thanjavur, Rameswaram, and Kumbakonam.
Currently, the budget tourism wing generates between ₹3.5 crore and ₹5 crore in monthly revenue, with approximately 30% of the income from each trip translating into profit. Other successful ventures for the corporation include the luxurious Nefertiti cruise package in Kochi and its popular double-decker bus services, further diversifying its revenue streams.
