Imagine being able to choose your favorite Kathakali performance – perhaps “Duryodhana Vadham” or “Dakshyagam” – and experiencing it in an intimate setting, just for you and your friends. Soon, this dream will become a vibrant reality right here in Fort Kochi!
Within the next month, Kerala Kalamandalam, a renowned institution for traditional arts, will inaugurate its very first external global outreach centre in the historic locale of Fort Kochi. This groundbreaking cultural hub is poised to deliver weekly Kathakali and various folk art performances for general audiences. What’s more, visitors will have the unique opportunity to book exclusive, private shows tailored just for them, all available at a special rate.
The final preparations are underway for this exciting new venture, which will operate from The Folklore Cultural Theatre in Fort Kochi, a venue adeptly managed by the Cochin Heritage Zone Conservation Society. By leasing this space, Kerala Kalamandalam is dedicated to providing enriching art experiences to a wider public.
Equipped with a performance hall accommodating up to 75 guests, an information centre, and a dedicated stage, this new facility is designed to be a vibrant cultural hub. Rajesh Kumar P., Registrar at Kerala Kalamandalam, explained, “It will regularly showcase Kerala’s exquisite classical and folk art performances every weekend.” He added that with thousands of international and domestic tourists visiting Kalamandalam annually, many find the journey challenging. Establishing a centre in a prime tourism destination like Fort Kochi will not only ease access for travelers but also effectively introduce these traditional art forms to a much broader audience.
“We are thrilled to offer an authentic experience of Kathakali, Koodiyattam, and various classical and folk arts,” Mr. Kumar stated. “You can even reserve a private performance, exclusively for your group.” Beyond performances, the centre will also host appreciation courses, masterclasses, and engaging workshops for Kathakali and Koodiyattam. Furthermore, daily tours to the main Kalamandalam campus are being planned, particularly to coincide with the popular Kochi-Muziris Biennale. All weekend performances will require a ticket for entry.
