Hours after the Haryana Police registered a case against former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa and his wife, Razia Sultana, in connection with the alleged murder of their son, Aqil Akhtar, Mustafa has issued a statement addressing the allegations. He asserted that the truth will come to light in the coming days.
Responding to the FIR, which was filed based on a social media post by his son, Mustafa commented, “The registration of an FIR absolutely does not mean that someone’s guilt has been proven.” He added, “The real investigation will begin now after the FIR is registered, and in a few days, the truth will come out before the public.”
This statement comes after it was initially believed that Aqil Akhtar’s death was due to natural causes. Aqil was discovered unconscious at his residence in Panchkula, Haryana, and was declared brought dead at the hospital. Following a post-mortem, his body was handed over to the family for final rites, with police initially ruling out foul play.
However, the investigation took a significant turn after videos and posts related to the incident surfaced. A complaint was lodged by Shamshudeen Chaudhary from Malerkotla, Punjab, leading to an FIR being filed under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 61 (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Mustafa, his wife Razia Sultana, their daughter, and daughter-in-law.
Mustafa, who retired from the Punjab Police in 2021 and later joined the Congress, stated, “If the police receive a written complaint in any matter, it becomes the duty of the police to register an FIR on that complaint. The Panchkula Police has carried out this duty, and I welcome it.” He also alleged that “dirty politics and cheap thinking” were behind the accusations, warning that those who filed the FIR based on baseless allegations should be prepared to face legal consequences.
He further expressed his grief over the loss of his son but emphasized that it would not deter them from countering what he described as “vile actions of those with dirty politics and cheap thinking.” In a video statement, Aqil Akhtar had reportedly accused his father of having an affair with his wife and alleged that his mother and sister were involved in a conspiracy against him.
Mustafa’s wife, Razia Sultana, is a three-term MLA representing Malerkotla.
