Printu Mahadevan, once a prominent figure as the former State president of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the BJP teachers’ cell State convener, voluntarily appeared before the police on Tuesday evening. This surrender followed a serious incident where he issued a death threat against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, during a televised debate. Following his appearance, the Kunnamkulam Judicial First Class Magistrate subsequently granted him bail.
Authorities in Peramangalam had previously filed a case against Mr. Mahadevan, citing violations under Sections 192, 352, and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These charges relate to allegations of instigating public unrest and making threatening statements.
Accompanied by several prominent BJP leaders, he arrived at the Peramangalam police station to complete his surrender process.
Upon surrendering, Mahadevan stated, “I am a teacher. I don’t promote violence,” distancing himself from the accusations.
The controversy erupted after Mr. Mahadevan, who is also a schoolteacher, made a highly inflammatory comment during a television discussion about the recent protests in Ladakh. He provocatively declared that “a bullet would be fired at Rahul Gandhi’s chest,” leading to widespread condemnation.
The formal complaint against him was lodged by KPCC secretary C.C. Sreekumar, who vehemently argued that Mahadevan’s remarks were a clear attempt to instigate violence and undermine public order across the nation.
In response to the police action, the BJP organized protests, asserting that the case against Mr. Mahadevan was politically motivated and unjust.
