The Income Tax Department made it crystal clear on Sunday, September 14, 2025: the deadline for submitting your Income Tax Returns (ITRs) remains strictly September 15. They firmly dismissed rumors circulating on social media about any further extensions.
In an official statement, the I-T department highlighted that misleading messages were being spread, falsely claiming the deadline—initially July 31, 2025, and then extended to September 15, 2025—had been moved again to September 30.
The department explicitly stated on its official X (formerly Twitter) account: "A fake news is in circulation stating that the due date of filing ITRs (originally due on 31.07.2025, and extended to 15.09.2025) has been further extended to 30.09.2025. The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025."
Taxpayers were strongly advised by the department to trust only information shared through its official and verified handle, @IncomeTaxIndia, and to ignore any unconfirmed posts or rumors.
Furthermore, the department assured the public that its dedicated helpdesk is operational 24/7, ready to assist taxpayers with all aspects of ITR filing, tax payments, and any other related queries.
They detailed the support available: "To assist taxpayers for ITR filing, tax payment and other related services, our helpdesk is functioning on a 24×7 basis, and we are providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions & Twitter/X."
Just a day prior, on Saturday, the I-T department announced a significant achievement: over 6 crore Income Tax Returns had already been successfully filed for the Assessment Year 2025-26. They extended their gratitude to both taxpayers and tax professionals for helping reach this impressive milestone.
Their message on X underscored this accomplishment: "Thank you taxpayers & tax professionals for helping us reach the milestone of 6 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) as of now and still counting. We urge all those who haven’t filed ITR for AY 2025-26, to file at the earliest to avoid last minute rush. Let’s continue this momentum!"
As Monday marks the absolute final day for ITR submissions, the department has issued a crucial reminder for all taxpayers to ensure they meet this deadline to steer clear of potential penalties and interest charges.
