A shocking accusation has emerged regarding the untimely demise of acclaimed singer Zubeen Garg. His bandmate, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, has formally alleged that Garg was poisoned in Singapore, a claim now being investigated based on official police documents.
Goswami explicitly named Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sharma, and festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta as the perpetrators, asserting they poisoned the singer. These grave accusations are detailed in the ‘Detailed Grounds of Arrest’ or remand note seen by reporters.
Both Sharma and Mahanta, along with two band members, Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta, have been apprehended in connection with the case and are currently held on a 14-day police remand.
Zubeen Garg’s death occurred under deeply perplexing circumstances in Singapore, where he was reportedly swimming in the sea. The singer had traveled to the Southeast Asian city-state to participate in the fourth annual NorthEast India Festival, an event organized by Shyamkanu Mahanta’s company.
A particularly disturbing detail from the investigation cites Goswami’s account of Garg’s final moments. He recounted hearing Siddharth Sharma repeatedly shout ‘Jabo de, jabo de’ (meaning ‘let him go, let him go’) as Garg struggled for air, seemingly on the verge of drowning. Goswami stressed that Garg was an exceptionally skilled swimmer, making death by accidental drowning highly improbable.
The remand note, endorsed by SIT member and senior SP Rosie Kalita, further reveals Goswami’s assertion that Sharma and Shyamkanu Mahanta intentionally poisoned Garg, choosing Singapore as the location to mask their alleged conspiracy. Furthermore, Sharma reportedly instructed Goswami to keep any yacht videos confidential.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has assembled a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) dedicated to unraveling the truth behind Garg’s death in Singapore. In a parallel effort, the Assam government has initiated its own one-man judicial commission to probe the matter.
Confidential sources within the CID have independently verified the authenticity of the remand note, lending significant weight to the allegations.
It has been noted that Shyamkanu Mahanta is the younger brother of Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, a former Director General of Police who now serves as the chief information commissioner for the Assam State Information Commission. His other brother, Nani Gopal Mahanta, was previously the education advisor to the Chief Minister and is now the Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University.
The remand note further highlights Goswami’s testimony, suggesting that a sinister plot was devised before Zubeen Garg’s death to make it appear accidental. Goswami specifically pointed to suspicious behavior exhibited by Siddharth Sharma, who was staying with him in Singapore at the time.
Moreover, Goswami’s statement details how Sharma allegedly seized control of the yacht from its sailor, deliberately causing it to rock violently in the middle of the sea, thus imperiling everyone on board.
Shockingly, when Garg began frothing at the mouth and nose – a clear sign of distress – Sharma reportedly dismissed it as mere acid reflux. He allegedly reassured others that there was no cause for concern, actively preventing the provision of urgent medical attention.
The ‘Detailed Grounds of Arrest’ conclude by stating that preliminary material evidence, encompassing documentary records, financial transactions, and witness testimonies gathered during the ongoing investigation, strongly indicates Sharma’s culpability in the singer’s death.
