As the grand Dasara festivities unfolded, Mysuru recently witnessed an extraordinary event that beautifully blended tradition with active engagement: the ‘Heritage Cycle Ride.’ Organized by the Department of Archaeology, Museums, and Heritage, in partnership with the Department of Tourism, this unique cycling tour drew hundreds of eager participants on Thursday.
Clad in special T-shirts proudly displaying the motto ‘Our Heritage, Our Pride,’ the cyclists kicked off their journey from the historic Rangacharlu Town Hall. Their route was a thoughtfully curated path through some of Mysuru’s most iconic and prominent heritage sites.
The picturesque ride encompassed a fascinating array of landmarks, including the majestic Town Hall, the elegant Silver Jubilee Clock Tower, the enigmatic Freemasons’ Club, the vibrant Chamaraja Wadiyar Circle, the grandeur of Mysore Palace, Krishnaraja Wadiyar Circle, the stately Lansdowne Building, the exquisite Jaganmohan Palace, Parakala Mutt, the old Commercial Tax Office, Padmalaya, the historic Old Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Crawford Hall, Metropole Circle, the Railway Station, K.R. Hospital Circle, Chamarajendra Technical Institute, Cauvery Emporium, and Gandhi Square. The scenic tour culminated back at its starting point, the Town Hall.
Throughout the ride, experienced historians, Selva Pillai Iyengar and Rangaraju, enriched the experience by sharing captivating insights at each stop. Their narratives illuminated the intricate architecture, profound historical significance, and rich cultural tapestry woven into each building, offering participants a deeper appreciation for Mysuru’s glorious past.
The event was officially flagged off by Mysuru’s own ultra-cyclist, Naveen D.S. Solanki. Renowned for his incredible feat of cycling from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Mr. Solanki brought an inspiring presence to the occasion.
Sharing highlights from his remarkable journey, particularly his long-distance cycling adventures, Mr. Solanki revealed that he once conquered an astounding 3,758 kilometers in just 10 days and 15 hours. He passionately advocated for regular cycling as an outstanding method for maintaining peak physical fitness, emphasizing its myriad health benefits.
He further lauded Mysuru, describing it as an idyllic setting for such activities. With its favorable environment, he believes the city is perfectly suited to encourage and foster a healthy, active lifestyle among its residents and visitors alike.
Distinguished officials, including Archaeology and Heritage Commissioner A. Devaraju and Chief Executive Officer Manjula, were among those present to support and celebrate this memorable heritage event.
