Embark on a unique Kuttanad adventure
The State Water Transport Department (SWTD) in Kerala is gearing up to launch its much-anticipated Kuttanad Safari this November. This innovative package tourism boat service will connect various picturesque destinations across the region, offering visitors an unparalleled exploration of Kerala’s famed backwaters.
A significant highlight of this initiative is the construction of an amphitheatre on the beautiful Pathiramanal island. Emphasizing eco-friendly and responsible tourism, this structure will be crafted entirely from sustainable local materials like grass and bamboo. Preparatory work is already underway, with construction of this unique venue set to begin in the coming days. This special tourism venture is a collaboration with the Muhamma grama panchayat and is proudly sponsored by Indian Oil Corporation.
Introducing the Solar-Powered Soura-1
The Kuttanad Safari will be conducted aboard the SWTD’s brand-new solar-powered passenger boat, ‘Soura-1’. The captivating journey will commence daily from the Alappuzha boat jetty at 10 a.m. The first stop will be the iconic Nehru Trophy finishing point, before continuing a leisurely cruise through the scenic Azhikkal canal. Here, tourists will indulge in a delightful traditional breakfast, savouring authentic local flavours.
Throughout the safari, visitors will have a hands-on opportunity to observe and even try their hand at traditional crafts such as coir making, intricate palm frond weaving, and mat weaving. A selection of beautifully handcrafted items, including palm-frond umbrellas, traditional winnowing baskets, and woven mats, will also be available for purchase, allowing guests to take a piece of Kuttanad home with them.
The cruise then glides past majestic ‘chundan vallams’, or snakeboats, offering close-up views of the stunning Kuttanadan landscape. Guests will gain fascinating insights into the unique formation of the C Block and R Block regions, central to the backwater ecosystem. Upon reaching the R Block, a lavish traditional Kuttanadan lunch awaits, featuring a delectable spread of backwater delicacies perfectly complemented by local toddy-shop specialities.
Adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the trip, the boat will host live performances of traditional art forms like ‘panchavadyam’, ‘shinkari melam’, ‘velakali’, and ‘kuthiyottam’ onboard. As evening approaches, the boat will arrive at Pathiramanal island, where more traditional art forms will be performed at the newly built amphitheatre. These cultural programmes are being organised in collaboration with the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA).
On the return journey to Alappuzha, guests can witness the fascinating process of clam harvesting and processing in the backwaters. They’ll also have the chance to browse and shop for Alappuzha’s signature products at charming floating stores. The immersive Kuttanad Safari will gracefully conclude back at the Alappuzha boat jetty at 6 p.m., leaving guests with unforgettable memories of Kerala’s natural and cultural richness.
A few months prior to the launch, Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar personally visited Pathiramanal island to oversee the project. The SWTD is meticulously curating this safari to ensure that tourists can truly experience the entire scenic beauty and cultural essence of Kuttanad in one comprehensive and captivating boat journey.
