The Department of Clinical Psychology at the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) in Mysuru recently organized a significant workshop titled “Prevention of Self-harm and Suicidal Behaviours.” This vital event was specifically designed for AIISH students and marks a broader series of awareness programs being conducted in schools and colleges throughout Mysuru.
Held in conjunction with World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, the workshop underscored a critical message: suicide is preventable. Dr. Rushi, Professor and Head of the Department of Clinical Psychology, highlighted that every incident of self-harm or suicide represents a profound public health concern, leaving deep and lasting impacts on families and the wider community.
The program delved into understanding the risk factors associated with self-harm and suicidal tendencies, with a strong emphasis on cultivating resilience among students. Through engaging and interactive activities, participants were encouraged to enhance their decision-making abilities, problem-solving skills, and coping mechanisms. A particular focus was placed on the 15-29 age group, where the prevalence of suicide is notably high, stressing the urgent need for targeted intervention and support.
Dr. Rushi passionately reiterated the collective responsibility to support one another, listen empathetically, create psychologically safe environments, and actively encourage help-seeking behaviors. She noted that the enthusiastic participation of students in the workshop reflected their commitment to fostering a compassionate and supportive community within the institute and beyond.
Adding to this powerful message, Yashodhar Kumar G.Y., a clinical psychologist from the same department, reinforced that every life holds immense value and that each individual deserves to be heard, supported, and truly cherished.
