Labour Minister Santosh Lad, who also oversees the Dharwad district, recently highlighted a crucial truth: “Our Constitution and the democratic system fundamentally aim to ensure equality for all members of society. Citizens are the very heart of democracy, and its strength will endure only if the younger generation remains ever-vigilant.”
Speaking at an event in Dharwad’s Karnatak College Grounds, organized by the district administration, zilla panchayat, and Social Welfare Department to mark International Day of Democracy, Minister Lad underscored the profound responsibility that lies with today’s youth.
He articulated that affirmative action policies, like reservation, were introduced with the explicit goal of fostering social, economic, and educational equity, ensuring that everyone has a fair shot at opportunities. “Those who genuinely believe in democratic values are the ones who fortify its foundations,” he asserted, adding, “democracy can only truly thrive through education, and our youth bear the significant duty of safeguarding it.”
Minister Lad reminded attendees that the Constitution guarantees every individual, regardless of community, caste, or creed, the right to live with dignity and access equal opportunities. He stressed that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s legacy transcends any single group; his progressive ideals should be integrated into our daily lives, not merely commemorated.
Furthermore, the Minister urged collective action against drug abuse, emphasizing the critical need to build a society free from its grip.
During his address, he also acknowledged the importance of the day, encouraging women to seize the constitutional guarantee of equal opportunity to drive their own development.
He reiterated that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s visionary work in crafting the Constitution provided a robust framework for democracy, and it is incumbent upon all citizens to uphold and follow its principles.
Notable attendees included IAS Probationary Officer Ritika Verma, Urban Development Authority chairman Shakir Sanadi, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Bhuvanesh Patil, and Superintendent of Police Gunjan Arya.
The event commenced with participants reciting the Preamble to the Constitution, followed by students sharing their thoughts on democracy. Prizes and certificates were awarded to the winners of various competitions.
To further celebrate Democracy Day, students from local schools and colleges participated in an energetic bicycle rally. Waving placards and chanting slogans that championed democratic values, the rally embarked from KCD Circle and wound through the city’s main thoroughfares before concluding at the R.N. Shetty District Stadium.
