On Saturday, November 1, 2024, the Rajiv Gandhi International (RGIA) Airport in Hyderabad received an alarming email containing a ‘human bomb’ threat targeting an IndiGo flight en route from Jeddah to Hyderabad. In response to this grave warning, the aircraft was immediately diverted to Mumbai, where it made a safe landing, according to police reports.
Airport authorities swiftly filed a complaint with the police, stating that the threat email, received around 5:30 a.m., explicitly warned against the IndiGo flight landing in Hyderabad.
The alarming message further claimed that ‘LTTE-ISI operatives onboard’ intended to execute a ‘major 1984 Madras Airport Modus operandi style blast,’ police added.
Following the alert, all relevant aviation stakeholders were notified, and the flight was successfully rerouted to Mumbai. Upon landing, comprehensive security checks were conducted, which fortunately revealed no credible threat. Police have registered a case, and a thorough investigation into the incident is currently underway.
An IndiGo spokesperson confirmed the incident in a statement, saying, “A security threat was received for IndiGo flight 6E 68 operating from Jeddah to Hyderabad on November 1, leading to the aircraft’s diversion to Mumbai.”
IndiGo stated that they followed all established protocols, immediately informing authorities and fully cooperating with them throughout the necessary security procedures, ensuring the aircraft was cleared for subsequent operations.
The airline’s spokesperson also emphasized their commitment to passenger well-being, stating, “We made every effort to minimize inconvenience to our customers, including providing refreshments and sharing regular updates.”
