The tranquil ashram of Amritapuri resonated with joy and devotion on Saturday, as thousands gathered to celebrate the 72nd birthday of the revered spiritual leader, Mata Amritanandamayi. The day began before dawn, ushering in a series of profound spiritual observances.
The early hours witnessed a mesmerizing display of faith, with 72 elaborate Maha Ganapati Homa rituals performed to invoke blessings. These were harmoniously complemented by powerful indigenous traditions shared by tribal communities, adding a unique cultural depth to the spiritual proceedings.
As the sun climbed higher, the atmosphere deepened with a captivating satsang (spiritual discourse) led by Swami Amritaswarupananda Puri, the distinguished vice-chairman of Mata Amritanandamayi Math. Following this, the air was filled with a soulful devotional music session, masterfully guided by renowned music director Sarath and the melodious voice of playback singer Manjari, touching the hearts of all present.
The grand public celebration officially commenced at 9 a.m. with Mata Amritanandamayi’s graceful arrival on stage. She was warmly welcomed by Governor Rajendra Arlekar, marking the beginning of the formal ceremonies. A deeply moving moment followed with the sacred Padapuja ceremony, symbolizing profound reverence and devotion.
Union Minister J.P. Nadda Honors Amma’s Legacy of Service
The official program was inaugurated by Union Health Minister and BJP national president, J.P. Nadda, who delivered a heartfelt tribute to Mata Amritanandamayi. He lauded her extraordinary and unwavering commitment to humanity, stating: “Amma’s entire life is a testament to serving humanity. In every sense, she embodies a true role model. Her humanitarian endeavors have touched lives across the globe, bringing hope and solace to countless individuals.”
Minister Nadda specifically praised the exceptional healthcare services provided by Amrita Hospitals and acknowledged the significant advancements Amrita has achieved in education. He also highlighted Amma’s transformative women empowerment initiatives, which have uplifted innumerable women in society. “Time and again, in the face of devastating disasters like the tsunami and floods, Amma’s boundless compassion has shone as a beacon of hope and strength,” he added. “This is why her birthday celebrations are uniquely meaningful – because they are always marked by the launch of new service initiatives, extending her loving embrace even further.”
A highlight of the event was the presentation of the prestigious Amritakeerthi Puraskaram to eminent literary figure P.R. Nathan. The esteemed award included a commendatory citation and a generous cash prize of ₹1,23,456, recognizing his significant contributions.
