E. Santhosh Kumar, a celebrated writer, has been named the recipient of the 49th Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Literary Award. His novel, Tapomayiyude Achan, earned him this esteemed recognition. The Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Trust, which sponsors the award, announced the news at a press conference on Sunday, October 5, 2025. The honor includes a cash prize of ₹1 lakh, a striking sculpture crafted by renowned artist Kanayi Kunhiraman, and a formal citation.
Perumbadavom Sreedharan, the president of the trust, officially declared the award winner. The selection process was rigorous, with the judging committee, comprising distinguished writers T.D. Ramakrishnan, Priya A.S., and N.P. Hafiz Mohamed, initially reviewing approximately 300 books. From this extensive list, Tapomayiyude Achan emerged as the unanimous choice after a final round featuring three exceptional works. According to Mr. Ramakrishnan, the jury reached a consensus on the winning novel. Mr. Mohamed highlighted Tapomayiyude Achan as an outstanding piece of fiction, particularly commending its insightful exploration of the pressing global issue of migration. Set in North East India, the novel is also lauded for its innovative language and masterful storytelling.
A two-time winner of the prestigious Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, E. Santhosh Kumar boasts an impressive literary career. His notable novels include Andhakaranazhi and Jnanabharam, alongside acclaimed short story collections such as Chaavukali, Galapagos, and Pasupatham.
The formal presentation of the award will take place on October 27, coinciding with Vayalar Ramavarma’s death anniversary, at a special ceremony at the Nishagandhi auditorium.
