In a harrowing incident that unfolded on Friday night (October 17, 2025), a driver experienced a truly miraculous escape when his car was dramatically swept away by strong currents on a submerged bridge near Kothamangalam, located in Kerala’s Ernakulam district. The terrifying event occurred after a sudden and intense burst of heavy rainfall.
The near-catastrophe took place at approximately 10 p.m. on the Kudamunda Bridge. Swift action from the Kothamangalam Fire and Rescue Services personnel was crucial; they quickly arrived at the scene and successfully pulled the vehicle, which had become perilously stuck against the bridge’s protective fence, to safety.
Earlier that evening, the entire Kothamangalam region had been hit by a severe and prolonged downpour.
This relentless, hours-long rainfall led to an alarming and rapid surge in the river’s water levels, completely submerging the bridge and bringing all traffic to a standstill. Tragically, the car found itself attempting to cross the bridge precisely as these dangerous conditions emerged.
