Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, on a recent Saturday morning, vehemently denied making any statement that hinted at his desire to become the Chief Minister. He clearly stated he was “in no hurry” to assume the top post, refuting claims made by certain media outlets.
During an interaction with the public at Lal Bagh as part of the ‘Bengaluru Nadige’ initiative, Shivakumar told reporters that his words had been distorted. He indicated he might pursue legal action, including a defamation case, against those intentionally twisting his statements.
This controversy unfolds amidst growing whispers within the ruling Congress party regarding a potential leadership reshuffle, especially as the government nears the halfway mark of its five-year term. Shivakumar is widely considered a strong contender for the Chief Minister’s position, even as incumbent Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his supporters consistently affirm that he will serve his full tenure.
Addressing the ‘Twisted’ Statements
Commenting on the latest uproar, Shivakumar clarified, “Some media houses are intentionally twisting my statement to stir up controversy. I have never said that it is my time to become the Chief Minister. I will absolutely file a defamation case if anyone misrepresents my words and broadcasts such twisted narratives.”
He explained that during the public event, some individuals expressed their wish for him to become the Chief Minister, but the media had erroneously presented this as his own declaration. “Please do not twist the news and create unnecessary controversy,” he urged.
“I am not rushing to occupy the Chief Minister’s chair. My focus remains solely on serving the people of Bengaluru and Karnataka tirelessly,” he asserted. “Where did I make such a statement? The media should refrain from playing politics. I haven’t made any such statement, nor is there any need for me to. I am aware of my objectives. Divine timing will bring opportunities when they are right. For now, my dedication is to the welfare of the people.”
Impending Cabinet Meeting
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has scheduled a dinner meeting with his Ministers for an upcoming Monday, sparking further speculation about a possible Cabinet reshuffle. This potential reshuffle is perceived by many as a strategic move by the Chief Minister to counter any efforts by Shivakumar to push for a change in leadership. It’s understood that late on a recent Thursday, Siddaramaiah held a private meeting with key ministers including Home Minister G. Parameshwara, Social Welfare Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, and Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi, further intensifying the ongoing political intrigue.
