Deepika Kumari, a four-time Olympian in archery, isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Instead of retirement, her sights are firmly set on the Los Angeles 2028 Games, where she plans a powerful final performance. Her primary focus right now is cultivating unwavering mental strength to conquer high-pressure scenarios.
The 29-year-old athlete, who will be 34 by 2028, revealed that these upcoming Olympics will likely be her last. She describes her approach to the next Games as a ‘do-or-die’ mission, emphasizing her fierce determination.
Speaking at the inaugural Archery Premier League in New Delhi, Deepika clarified, “This isn’t the final chapter of my career; I haven’t decided on that yet. Every competition I’ve experienced so far has been invaluable.”
Deepika explained that her current training regimen meticulously balances both mental and technical refinement.
She elaborated, “I’ve been intensely focusing on both my mental game and technical skills. This league is proving instrumental in my progress. While performing before a crowd certainly adds pressure, it’s precisely this pressure that fosters growth and sharpens a player’s preparation.”
Deepika candidly shared, “My goal is to master every technique. Previously, mental hurdles during critical tournament matches often cost me valuable results.”
“I’m heavily involved in visualization, mental training, and even practicing mindful thinking throughout my day – while walking, while eating. My aim is for my technique to become so instinctual that I don’t need conscious thought during high-stakes moments. I’m truly putting in the effort,” she affirmed. She also expressed her enthusiasm for compound archery’s inclusion in the Olympic program, highlighting its potential to dramatically boost India’s medal count.
The Power of Mental Wellbeing in Elite Sports
Deepika emphasized the strong camaraderie among Indian archers, stating that this bond is vital for navigating the intense mental demands of the sport.
She explained, “As archers, we offer immense support to one another. Beyond discussing techniques on the field, we extend help in our personal lives too. If a teammate faces mental or technical difficulties, we address them collectively.”
The Olympian also spoke highly of her partnership with her husband and fellow archer, Atanu Das, noting their shared support both in their professional careers and personal lives.
Deepika lauded India’s inaugural Archery Premier League, describing it as a much-anticipated and significant development for the sport nationally.
“We’re thrilled to be competing in a tournament right here in India,” Deepika shared. “This is the first time a league of this kind has been launched, and we’re all thoroughly enjoying it. The archery league has finally arrived, and it’s something we’ve been looking forward to for a very long time.”
She concluded by inviting fans to attend the events and support the athletes.
“It’s important for people to come and cheer for us,” Deepika said. “The crowd generates pressure, which is actually beneficial as it primes us for crucial matches. When fans attend and recognize the players by name, it truly electrifies the atmosphere.”
