As the joyous Deepavali festival approaches, railway security across the Palakkad division has been significantly strengthened. Dedicated teams from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) are actively carrying out special inspections to guarantee heightened safety for everyone traveling by train.
Passengers are strictly advised against carrying or transporting any flammable substances. This includes items like firecrackers, gas cylinders, petrol, diesel, kerosene, portable stoves, matchboxes, and cigarette lighters. Divisional Railway Manager Madhukar Roat emphasized, “Even a small spark can lead to devastating accidents, putting countless lives at risk and causing immense damage to vital railway infrastructure.”
To bolster these efforts, RPF and GRP units, aided by trained sniffer dogs, have been strategically deployed at all major stations within the division. Additionally, monitoring through surveillance cameras has been ramped up considerably, Mr. Roat confirmed.
Intensified ticket checks are also underway at key railway hubs such as Palakkad Junction, Shoranur Junction, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Mangaluru Central. Mr. Roat appealed to all rail users to “celebrate Deepavali responsibly” by strictly avoiding the carriage or transportation of any prohibited flammable materials on trains.
He further cautioned that individuals found with flammable items on trains would face severe penalties under Sections 67, 164, and 165 of the Railway Act of 1989. Offenders could face imprisonment for up to three years, a fine of up to ₹1,000, or both. They would also be held fully accountable for any resulting losses, injuries, or damages.
Passengers are encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious materials or activities to railway authorities. For immediate assistance or to report concerns, the railway toll-free helpline 139 is available.
