The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bengaluru has issued a yellow alert for 11 districts in Karnataka, predicting widespread rainfall over the next few days due to the approaching Cyclone Montha. This alert specifically covers October 27 and 28.
According to C.S. Patil, a scientist at IMD Bengaluru, heavy rainfall is expected in Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Bidar, Kalaburgi, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Raichur, Koppal, and Gadag districts on both October 27 and 28.
Additionally, Bengaluru, Vijayanagara, Chitradurga, Davangere, Tumakuru, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Bengaluru Rural, and Bengaluru South districts are also under a yellow alert for October 27.
The IMD’s meteorological analysis indicates that Cyclone Montha is projected to move north-northwestward and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28. The storm is then expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, during the evening or night of October 28. At landfall, it is forecast to be a severe cyclonic storm with sustained wind speeds of 90-100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.
Coastal Areas and Interior Karnataka to Face Impact
Mr. Patil highlighted that coastal districts will likely experience extensive rainfall from October 27 to 29, with showers anticipated to persist until November 2.
Meanwhile, districts in both south and north interior Karnataka are also predicted to receive heavy rainfall on October 27 and 28, with the intensity expected to decrease after October 29.
On Monday, October 27, coastal areas witnessed significant rainfall, while several regions in south and north interior Karnataka also experienced showers. Specifically, Gadag recorded 5 cm of rain, HAL Airport in Bengaluru received 3 cm, and Mandya also reported 3 cm.
