The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared a ‘cyclone alert’ for the picturesque Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as a cyclonic circulation brewing over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify starting October 21, 2025. This warning was announced on Monday, October 20, by officials.
In response to the evolving weather system, local port warnings have been issued, with authorities anticipating significant rainfall across the islands until October 23.
Specifically, the Nicobar Islands are forecast to experience heavy rain, with precipitation ranging from 7 to 11 cm in isolated areas. Additionally, thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds, reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph and potentially gusting up to 55 kmph, along with lightning, are highly probable over both the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on October 21, 22, and 23.
Mariners and coastal communities are urged to exercise extreme caution as squally weather, featuring surface wind speeds of 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph, is very likely to prevail over the Andaman Sea from October 22 to 23. Sea conditions are expected to be rough for the next five days, prompting a strong advisory for fishermen to avoid venturing into the Andaman Sea and along the Andaman and Nicobar coast until October 24.
The administration has also cautioned boat owners, local residents, and tourists about the possibility of surging waves. They are advised to operate boats with the utmost vigilance and to conduct all recreational activities with due care. Tourists and the general public are strictly advised to stay away from the sea and adhere to all safety guidelines issued by local authorities to ensure their well-being during this period of adverse weather.
