The Bengaluru police are diligently searching for a man who recently impersonated a Department of Telecommunication (DoT) official. This individual contacted Rajya Sabha member Sudha Murty, attempting to extract her sensitive personal information.
Following a formal complaint lodged by Ganapathy Bopaiah, acting on behalf of Ms. Murty, the police swiftly filed a First Information Report (FIR) on Saturday. The charges include serious offenses under the Information Technology Act, 2000, specifically sections 66C (identity theft), 66D (impersonation), and 84C (attempt to commit an offense).
The fraudster, pretending to be a DoT staffer, informed Ms. Murty that her mobile number was not linked to her Aadhaar, then demanded her personal details. When Ms. Murty wisely refused to provide the information, the caller reportedly became aggressive, threatening to deactivate her SIM card within three hours. Ms. Murty promptly ended the call and, upon checking the number on TrueCaller, found it was indeed listed as “Telecom Department,” adding a deceptive layer of legitimacy to the scam.
Investigators have successfully traced the caller’s location to Kolkata, and a specialized police team has been deployed to apprehend the individual responsible for this cybercrime.
