Early Saturday morning in Cuttack, Odisha, a Durga Puja idol immersion procession turned violent, resulting in injuries to six individuals, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Rishikesh Khillari. Authorities have confirmed the arrests of six people in connection with the incident.
The confrontation occurred around 2 a.m. near Hatipokhari in the Daraghabazar area. Reports indicate that local residents objected to the loud music being played by the procession as it made its way towards Debigara, located on the banks of the Kathajodi river.
Police Commissioner S. Dev Datt Singh later confirmed that six individuals have been taken into custody following the outbreak of violence.
He stated that those arrested were implicated in stone pelting, with their identities confirmed through CCTV surveillance footage.
The initial objection from locals regarding the high-decibel music quickly escalated into a full-blown clash. Both factions began throwing stones and glass bottles, forcing police to use batons to disperse the crowd and restore order, according to officials.
The situation was further complicated by the arrival of another procession, leading to renewed tension. Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) were deployed to manage the escalating unrest, eventually allowing the immersion ceremonies to restart around 6 a.m. under stringent security measures.
The prolonged disruption left approximately 50 Durga Puja idols from various community groups stalled for about four hours.
By 10 a.m., a total of 120 Durga idols had been immersed, Commissioner Singh confirmed.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who also oversees the Home Department, is reportedly monitoring the evolving situation from Delhi, officials confirmed.
DGP Y.B. Khurania held a crucial meeting with senior police officials to assess the circumstances.
DCP Khilari, who sustained injuries during the clashes, is reported to be in stable condition. Additionally, one critically injured individual was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik sharply criticized the incident, asserting that the police seemed "completely helpless" in managing the volatile situation.
He further alleged that "pressure on the police under the BJP government is disrupting law and order in the State."
Patnaik expressed deep concern, stating, "Such an unpleasant situation in Cuttack, the city known for its brotherhood, is quite alarming. The act of throwing stones and bottles during the Bhusani rituals highlights a significantly sensitive issue." He emphasized that "in a peaceful state like Odisha, this atmosphere of unrest is never acceptable."
He concluded by urging citizens to uphold harmony and goodwill, appealing for "peace and friendship to prevail in society."
