B. Rajendran, a CPI(M) councillor representing the Muttathara ward in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, has resigned from his position. This decision came on Friday following public accusations that he accepted a commission to facilitate funds for a road construction project. In a decisive move, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) also announced his expulsion from its primary membership, as confirmed by CPI(M) district secretary V. Joy. The party had demanded his resignation immediately after the allegations emerged in the media. Mr. Rajendran was reportedly accused of soliciting money from homeowners residing in a bylane, for which funds were specifically allocated to lay interlock tiles. Addressing the media, Mr. Joy highlighted the swift action taken by the CPI(M) against its own councillor, contrasting it with what he described as a lack of similar accountability from opposition parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) when faced with comparable allegations against their members. Reaffirming the party’s commitment, Mr. Joy stated unequivocally, ‘The CPI(M) will under no circumstances protect those who are involved in corrupt practices.’
