On October 31, 2025, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) vehemently criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of making “hateful and derogatory remarks” directed at the people of Tamil Nadu during a recent election rally in Bihar.
P. Shanmugam, the State Secretary of CPI(M), released a statement claiming that Prime Minister Modi’s displays of affection towards Tamils are merely a facade for political advantage. Shanmugam highlighted a pattern of disparaging comments from Modi in other states, citing instances such as questioning the eligibility of a Tamil to govern Odisha during its Assembly elections, and baselessly alleging that the Puri Jagannath temple treasury keys were concealed in Tamil Nadu. Most recently, during his Bihar campaign, Modi reportedly suggested that Biharis were being mistreated in Tamil Nadu—a claim Shanmugam believes was made purely for electoral gain.
Shanmugam further asserted that Modi, seemingly unable to garner support based on his government’s accomplishments, has consistently resorted to divisive rhetoric. He pointed out repeated attempts to incite animosity, targeting various communities including Muslims, Christians, and now Tamils. Shanmugam concluded by stating that such divisive language is deeply inappropriate for a Prime Minister and called upon the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take immediate action.
