Prayagraj: A 60-year-old individual serving a life sentence allegedly died by suicide in Uttar Pradesh’s Naini Central Jail late Saturday evening, according to police reports.

The deceased, who hailed from Barua village in Kaushambi district, had been convicted in a 2020 murder case involving his neighbor. He was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Kaushambi sessions court on December 23, 2023, along with his two brothers.
Previously housed in Kaushambi District Jail, the convict was transferred to Naini Central Jail on July 20, 2025.
Senior jail superintendent Vijay Vikram Singh confirmed that an inquiry has been launched to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death.
Jail officials reported that the inmate allegedly used a towel to hang himself from a mango tree located near the mat storage area in cell number two.
Inmates discovered him hanging late Saturday evening and immediately raised an alarm, leading to the notification of senior jail authorities.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Trans-Yamuna), Vivek Chandra Yadav, stated that the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and the report is currently awaited.
The wife of the deceased shared that she was informed of her husband’s death by their son late Saturday night, following a call from jail authorities. She mentioned, “I had met him in Naini Jail during Navratri on October 31, and he seemed fine at that time.”
