Congress Moves Parliamentary Privilege Panel After Alleged Police Attack on MP Shafi Parambil

Kozhikode MP M.K. Raghavan has declared that the Congress party intends to approach the Parliamentary Committee on Privileges in the Lok Sabha. Their aim is to initiate action against the police personnel who allegedly attacked Vadakara MP Shafi Parambil with lathis in Perambra, a district incident that occurred on Friday night, October 10, 2025.

Raghavan made this announcement during a ‘dharna’ organized by the United Democratic Front (UDF) outside the office of the Inspector-General of Police in Kozhikode on Saturday morning, October 11, 2025. This demonstration was a direct response to the controversial police action.

Reports also indicated that police had earlier registered cases against Shafi Parambil and approximately 600 other Congress workers in connection with the Perambra clashes.

Mr. Parambil suffered nasal injuries during the incident and is currently receiving medical care at a private hospital in Kozhikode city. The confrontation escalated after activists from the UDF and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) came face-to-face following a ‘hartal’ (strike) called by the UDF in the town, an aftermath of a contentious students’ union election at a local government college.

Mr. Raghavan emphasized that the police personnel involved in the attack on Mr. Parambil would be held accountable before the privilege committee in New Delhi. He further alleged that the police acted under the direct influence of the LDF government, which he claimed was desperate to divert public attention from the unfolding Sabarimala gold plating controversy.

Adding to the volatile situation, Congress leaders, including Kalpetta MLA T. Siddique, V.P. Dulkhifil, and K.M. Abhijith, were reportedly obstructed from visiting injured Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, earlier in the day. The Congress leaders claimed they were physically assaulted by CPI(M) activists. The injured KSU members were later transferred to the same private hospital where Mr. Parambil is admitted.

K.C. Venugopal, the All-India Congress Committee general secretary in-charge of organization, told the media in Kannur that the police action against Mr. Parambil was a strategic maneuver by the government to evade scrutiny over the Sabarimala fiasco. Venugopal asserted that the Congress MP was merely visiting a location within his constituency to help calm a tense situation when he was unexpectedly attacked by the police.
