Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has taken a swipe at the relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, following Trump’s latest reiteration of his claim that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Trump made this claim again while addressing business leaders in Japan during his tour of Asia.
Sharing a clip of Trump’s statement on X (formerly Twitter), Ramesh pointed out that Trump has now made this claim 54 times, having stated it in various countries and even mid-flight. Ramesh humorously commented, “No wonder his good friend in New Delhi does not want to hug him any more,” implying a possible strain in the relationship between the two leaders.
In the shared video, Trump is heard explaining how he used tariffs as a tool to de-escalate global conflicts. He specifically mentioned the India-Pakistan situation, stating that when “seven brand new, beautiful planes were shot down” between the two nuclear powers, he intervened and used trade as a means to stop the confrontation.
This is not the first time Trump has claimed to have brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. He has made similar statements on multiple occasions, even after Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised him for “saving millions of lives in South Asia” by intervening in the conflict.
However, India has consistently refuted Trump’s claims. Despite Sharif’s commendation, which included suggesting Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize for his role in stopping the war, India maintains that such claims are unfounded.
