In light of the recent violent unrest gripping Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), the Congress party on Saturday, October 4, 2025, vehemently criticized the prevalent “politics of harassment and oppression” in the region. The party reaffirmed its unwavering belief that PoK remains an integral part of India.
Addressing reporters in Anantnag, South Kashmir, Tariq Karra, president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), conveyed the entire nation’s deep sympathies to the people of PoK. He underscored that the Indian Parliament has already passed a resolution affirming PoK as Indian territory.
“Our sympathies, the sympathies of the entire country, are with them. The people there are being treated undemocratically. The Congress stands firmly against the politics of harassment and oppression being practiced,” Mr. Karra stated. He emphasized that the residents of PoK are an integral part of Jammu and Kashmir, deserving full solidarity.
The region has seen significant turmoil in recent days, with at least 10 individuals reportedly killed and numerous others injured in clashes between protesters and security forces. The demonstrators are demanding fundamental rights, justice, and an end to what they describe as systematic oppression.
Responding to questions on other international matters, Mr. Karra reaffirmed the Congress party’s historical support for the Palestinian cause. “Indira Gandhi was a staunch champion of the Palestinian cause. We have always extended our full-fledged support to the people of Palestine, and that commitment will continue,” he asserted.
Regarding the detention of Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act, Mr. Karra expressed strong disapproval, attributing the situation to the “BJP’s ‘my way or highway’ mindset.” He highlighted that Wangchuk, previously hailed by the BJP as a nationalist for praising the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35-A and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is now being labeled anti-national despite his significant contributions to environmental, educational, and societal development.
“Everyone has a right to approach any forum. The Congress party’s position is clear on this matter. Mr. Wangchuk has become a casualty of the BJP’s rigid ideology,” Mr. Karra explained.
Looking ahead, the Congress leader confirmed that the party intends to raise the crucial issue of restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood during the upcoming session of the J&K Assembly.
