In a significant resolution passed after its meeting in Patna, Bihar, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) declared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s distinctive ‘huglomacy’ approach has had detrimental effects, leading to India’s diplomatic isolation and hindering its ability to safeguard national interests.
The party further articulated profound anxiety regarding what it perceives as a ‘collapse’ in India’s foreign policy landscape.
“The relentless attacks by the BJP-RSS on the foundational principles of our Constitution and Republic have continued unabated. The core tenets of our democracy—liberty, equality, fraternity, and justice—are systematically being dismantled,” the party stated in its resolution, released shortly after the extended CWC session in Patna.
The Congress leadership convened in Patna for its inaugural working committee meeting in Bihar, ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The primary objective was to strategize and intensify its critique of the BJP, particularly focusing on allegations of ‘vote chori’ or electoral manipulation.
With a clear focus on the impending elections, the party adopted several key resolutions during the crucial gathering, attended by permanent and special invitees, Chief Ministers from Congress-led states, Pradesh Congress Committee presidents, and Congress Legislature Party leaders.
Addressing the serious accusations of ‘vote theft,’ the CWC asserted that the ongoing electoral roll revision in Bihar is another ‘dirty trick’ from the BJP’s playbook, designed to manipulate voter lists and retain power. This process, they argued, is specifically crafted to disenfranchise marginalized communities.
“The alleged ‘vote chori’ and widespread irregularities in our electoral rolls have profoundly eroded public trust in the very foundations of our democracy,” the resolution highlighted.
Reaffirming its unwavering commitment to the Constitution, the CWC emphasized that the upcoming Bihar election would ‘seal the fate’ of what it described as a ‘corrupt, incompetent, and authoritarian government.’ The party pledged, “We will staunchly resist all attempts to undermine it. We are determined to reclaim the Republic, reinstate constitutional values, and ensure justice, dignity, and equality for every citizen.”
Moreover, the Congress’s resolution touched upon U.S. President Donald Trump’s persistent claims about intervening to halt the India-Pakistan conflict following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The party noted with concern that the Indian Government has failed to adequately address these assertions, even as Mr. Trump continues to claim he used trade leverage to coerce India into stopping ‘Operation Sindoor.’
Regarding India’s economic situation, the resolution contended that the current government has caused ‘economic devastation,’ despite its efforts to manipulate data to project an image of a thriving economy.
Finally, the CWC conveyed its deep distress over the ongoing ‘genocide of innocent civilians in Gaza.’ It lamented, “India, traditionally a beacon of moral conscience and a champion for the postcolonial world, has now been shamefully reduced to a silent spectator. Our foreign policy, as a result, has acquired a moral taint.”
