China made a triumphant return to form, securing their 15th World Junior Mixed Team Badminton Championship (Suhandinata Cup) title with a hard-fought victory over Indonesia on Saturday. The Chinese team clinched the championship with a final score of 45-30, 45-44, avenging their defeat in last year’s final.
Both Japan and India, having reached the semi-finals, were awarded well-deserved bronze medals for their strong performances in the tournament.
The eagerly anticipated final, held before a packed crowd at the National Tennis Centre, unfolded as a dramatic contest of two distinct halves. China dominated the opening set, sweeping all five matches to establish a commanding lead. However, Indonesia refused to concede, launching a spirited comeback.
Spurred on by their vocal bench, which evoked the legendary atmosphere of Istora Senayan, Indonesia began their fightback. Riska Anggraini and Rinjani Kwinnara Nastine secured a crucial 9-5 win in the girls’ doubles, defeating China’s Cao Zi Han and Chen Fan Shu Tian.
The momentum appeared to shift further when Ikhsan Lintang Pramudya partnered with Nastine in mixed doubles, extending Indonesia’s lead to 13-7 and suggesting a potential third-set decider. Yet, China’s Chen Jun Ting and Cao had a different narrative in mind, staging an incredible rally by winning 11 of the subsequent 12 points to regain control.
Maintaining China’s advantage, Liu Si Ya and Liu Yang Ming Yu secured 9-9 draws in their respective singles matches against Thalita Ramadhani Wiryawan and Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah, preserving China’s four-point lead.
A palpable sense of déjà vu swept through the Chinese camp.
Much like their tense semifinal against Japan, China’s men’s doubles pair, Ting and Liu Jun Rong, nearly let their lead slip away. In a strategic move, Indonesia brought in Muhammad Rizki Mubarrok to partner Raihan Daffa Edsel Pramono. With Indonesia leading 44-43, Mubarrok and Pramono had two golden chances to push the final to a deciding third set. However, in a moment of high drama, both players netted the shuttle consecutively, bringing the thrilling contest to an abrupt end and handing China the victory.
In a gripping finish, China thwarted a set point from Indonesia to secure their 15th BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships (Suhandinata Cup) title with a 45-30, 45-44 victory in Guwahati, achieving sweet redemption for their defeat in the previous year’s championship.
