Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has firmly declared that the ongoing social and educational survey, conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backwards Classes, aims to empower all communities without any intention of suppression or discrimination. He stressed, “Those who oppose this crucial survey are the very individuals who do not wish to see an egalitarian society flourish.”
Speaking to media at the Ginigera airstrip in Koppal on Monday, October 6, 2025, where he was inaugurating and laying foundation stones for development projects worth ₹2000 crores, the Chief Minister addressed various pertinent issues.
Advancing Equitable Development
Responding to allegations from Union Minister V. Somanna, who claimed the survey sought to ‘undermine upper castes,’ Siddaramaiah dismissed these assertions as baseless and misleading. He elaborated, “Without such a survey, a government cannot truly grasp the social, economic, and educational realities of its diverse populace. Our objective is not to diminish anyone, but to ensure balanced and equitable development for all.”
When questioned about Union Minister Pralhad Joshi’s refusal to participate in the state-level survey, Mr. Siddaramaiah countered by asking if the Union Minister would similarly object to the Central Government’s proposed caste census.
Survey Progress in Koppal and Beyond
The Chief Minister reported that approximately 1.10 crore households have already been covered by the survey, achieving a 63% completion rate as of October 5. He indicated that the survey’s progress would be reviewed by Tuesday evening, October 7, after which a decision on extending the deadline would be made.
Notably, Koppal district has achieved an impressive 97% completion rate for the survey. Mr. Siddaramaiah reaffirmed his stance, asserting that opposition to this exercise is, in essence, resistance to essential social change. He also took a moment to express gratitude to the people of Koppal, recalling their support during his past Lok Sabha constituency contest.
Addressing Local Concerns: Baldota Steel Plant Protests and Pollution
Regarding the ongoing protests against the proposed Baldota Group steel plant in Koppal, Mr. Siddaramaiah stated that the matter is currently in court. He assured that appropriate action would be taken following the court’s final decision.
Responding to concerns about environmental pollution from industrial dust, particularly from units like MSPL, the Chief Minister pledged that the government would conduct thorough inspections and implement necessary measures to control dust emissions effectively.
Stance on Separate Lingayat Religion and Government Schemes
On the renewed demand for separate religious status for Lingayats, the Chief Minister remarked, “Individuals are free to identify their religion as they choose; enumerators will record it accordingly. My position on this remains consistent with the people’s sentiments.”
He also dismissed allegations that government guarantee schemes were not reaching their intended beneficiaries, affirming that all such schemes are being successfully implemented and are indeed benefiting the populace.
Finally, addressing concerns about reports of child deaths due to cough syrups in other states, the Chief Minister confirmed that he has instructed the Health Department to take all necessary precautions and closely monitor the situation to ensure public safety.
