In a significant move to enhance Chennai’s urban infrastructure, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin officially inaugurated the city’s newest and longest flyover in T. Nagar on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. This impressive structure now seamlessly connects South Usman Road with CIT Nagar Main Road, promising a smoother commute for thousands.
Stretching for a remarkable two kilometers, this flyover is a beacon of hope for motorists navigating the notoriously busy streets of T. Nagar. It’s designed to significantly alleviate traffic congestion and slash travel times for residents and commuters traveling from key areas like Guindy, Saidapet, and Nungambakkam.
An engineering marvel, the flyover boasts 53 robust steel pillars, incorporating an astounding 3,800 tonnes of steel. Constructed at a cost of ₹164.92 crore, this strategic infrastructure project is specifically aimed at dissolving traffic snarls at critical intersections, including South Usman Road-Burkit Road-Madley Road, South Usman Road-South West Boag Road-New Boag Road, and South Usman Road-CIT Nagar North Road.
During the inauguration, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, accompanied by various ministers and officials, was seen on the newly opened structure, marking a historic moment for Chennai. The flyover itself has been proudly named the ‘J. Anbazhagan Flyover,’ honoring the late DMK MLA. With a width of 8.4 meters, it is designed to manage two-way traffic flow efficiently. Adding to its accessibility are dedicated ramps: a 120-meter ramp for entry from the T. Nagar bus terminus and a 100-meter ramp for exiting towards the vibrant T. Nagar commercial area.
Beyond its primary function, the flyover incorporates thoughtful urban planning elements, including spacious 6-meter-wide footpaths and parallel service roads. City planners anticipate that this new lifeline will accommodate over 40,000 vehicles and 200,000 pedestrians daily. Adding to the aesthetic appeal, the flyover’s pillars and walls feature beautiful artwork that vividly portrays the daily life and bustling trade of T. Nagar’s residents and local businesses, making it not just a utility but a cultural landmark.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by several prominent dignitaries, including Municipal Administration and Water Supply Minister K.N. Nehru, Health Minister Ma. Subramanian, HR&CE and CMDA Minister P.K. Sekar Babu, Chennai Mayor R. Priya, Deputy Mayor Mu. Magesh Kumaar, MAWS Secretary D. Karthikeyan, Corporation Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran, and Metrowater MD T.G. Vinay, underscoring the project’s significance for the city.
