On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin made a significant appearance at the State police headquarters, participating in the annual Police Commemoration Day. This marked a historic occasion as it was the first time a sitting Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu had attended the solemn event, where he paid heartfelt tributes to the brave police officers who sacrificed their lives while on duty.

Annually held on October 21st, Police Commemoration Day serves as a poignant reminder of the profound sacrifices made by law enforcement personnel. It honors not only the 10 CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) jawans tragically killed in a surprise attack by Chinese forces in Ladakh in 1959 but also countless other police officers who have fallen in the line of duty across the nation.

At the police memorial within the Director General of Police’s complex in Chennai, Chief Minister Stalin, accompanied by Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Dheeraj Kumar, DGP (in-charge) G. Venkataraman, Greater Chennai City Police Commissioner A. Arun, and other esteemed serving and retired officers, reverently laid wreaths, honoring the memory of the fallen.

Government Extends Support to Families of Martyrs

During the ceremony, the Chief Minister personally presented appointment orders to 20 individuals, offering them compassionate appointments. These appointments are part of a larger initiative to provide employment to 175 family members of police personnel who tragically lost their lives during their service.

In a gesture of unwavering support, Chief Minister Stalin also disbursed cheques of ₹1 crore each as individual insurance benefits. These funds, provided under the Tamil Nadu Government’s Comprehensive Salary Package Scheme, were presented to the families of Special Sub-Inspector M. Shanmugavel from Tiruppur district and Head Constable S. Jesmin Milton Raj from Krishnagiri district, both of whom tragically died in the line of duty.

Additionally, ex-gratia payments of ₹20 lakh each were provided to the families of Special Sub-Inspector P. Vivek Kumar from Virudhunagar district and Head Constable S. Jesmin Milton Raj from Krishnagiri district, recognizing their immense sacrifice.

Overall, a total of ₹5.70 crore was distributed by the Chief Minister as a combination of individual accident insurance benefits and compassionate ex-gratia payments to the families of six dedicated police personnel, ensuring their welfare and honoring their service.
