Exciting news for Chennai! The Kalaignar International Convention Centre, a monumental initiative for Tamil Nadu, is steadily progressing towards its grand opening, expected by February 2026. On Monday, October 27, 2025, Public Works Minister E.V. Velu personally inspected the ongoing construction, ensuring that this ambitious project, complete with its extensive infrastructure, remains on schedule.
Designed to elevate Chennai’s status as a premier destination for major conferences and events, the convention centre is currently seeing its second floor take shape. This impressive development spans a vast 37.99-acre site in Muttukadu, promising a new era for large-scale gatherings in the region.
Initiated in May of this year by the Public Works Department, this ₹525-crore project boasts a substantial plinth area of 2.08 lakh square feet. It is meticulously planned to host a diverse range of conferences and significant events, as detailed in an official press release.
Upon completion, the state-of-the-art facility will feature a massive 91,924 square feet exhibition hall capable of accommodating up to 10,000 visitors. Additionally, it will include a spacious convention hall with seating for 5,000 people, and a well-appointed auditorium with a capacity of 1,500. To ensure a seamless experience for all attendees, the centre will also provide dedicated dining areas and extensive parking facilities for 1,638 four-wheelers and 1,700 two-wheelers.
Minister Velu expressed confidence that once operational, the Kalaignar International Convention Centre will significantly enhance Tamil Nadu’s global presence and identity. Senior officials, including Mangat Ram Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary for the Public Works Department, were present during the review.
