The first phase of Chennai’s ambitious Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) in Mappedu is rapidly progressing and is anticipated to be operational by April 2026. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to dramatically improve logistics and trade efficiency across the region, according to Sunil Paliwal, Chairperson of the Chennai Port Authority.
During the recent Blue Economy Summit Tamil Nadu (BESTN 2025), hosted by the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board, Mr. Paliwal highlighted the Chennai Port’s remarkable 9.7% growth. He attributed this surge to enhanced containerization practices and competitive pricing strategies. He also noted that the southern region’s robust GDP growth is a key contributor to this positive trend.
Addressing concerns about the potential impact of new tariffs, Mr. Paliwal explained that while container volumes were exceptionally high in April, May, and June, likely due to efforts to meet previous tariff deadlines, the overall effect of the tariffs has been less severe than expected. He remarked that a significant dip was anticipated, but the market’s resilience has allowed businesses to adapt, find compensatory solutions, and explore alternative trade routes.
Adding to this optimistic outlook, E.V. Velu, the Minister of Public Works, Highways, and Minor Ports for the Government of Tamil Nadu, emphasized that the state’s vibrant coastal economy is poised to be a pivotal driver in achieving Tamil Nadu’s ambitious goal of a $1 trillion economy.
