Violent protests erupted outside Baksa District Jail in Assam on Wednesday following the court-ordered remand of five accused individuals in the singer Zubeen Garg’s death case to judicial custody. The situation escalated as a large crowd gathered near the jail, demanding justice for the late singer.
Tensions flared when some protesters began pelting stones at the vehicles transporting the accused, leading to chaos and a significant police presence to manage the situation.
The individuals sent to judicial custody include Shyamkanu Mahanta, organizer of the Northeast India Festival, and Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, both arrested on October 1. Also in custody are Sandipan Garg, Zubeen’s cousin and a suspended Assam Police Service officer, along with two of Garg’s personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya, who were arrested on October 10. All five were previously held in police custody for interrogation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the singer’s death.
