Kannur witnessed intense unrest on Tuesday as a protest march organized by the Kerala Students Union (KSU) escalated into a violent confrontation with police. The demonstration, which began at the Kannur District Congress Committee (DCC) office and proceeded towards the Range Deputy Inspector General of Police’s office, was a forceful demand for action against alleged police misconduct in Vadakancherry, Thrissur.
Under the leadership of KSU State vice president P. Mohammed Shammas and district president M.C. Atul, the peaceful march quickly devolved into a street battle. Activists attempted to break through police barricades, prompting law enforcement to deploy water cannons five times to disperse the crowd. Numerous individuals were subsequently taken into custody.
During a sit-in protest in front of the DIG office, KSU activists voiced serious allegations, accusing Inspector Shajahan of Vadakancherry of presenting detained individuals in court with their faces controversially covered. This accusation fueled much of the protestors’ outrage and their call for accountability.
