The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has given its nod to an exciting urban forest project, set to unfold across 38 acres within the Forest Department’s jurisdiction at Veermalakunnu. This stunning hilltop in Kasaragod district is poised for a major boost in its tourism potential.
This ambitious Veermalakunnu tourism initiative will proceed in two distinct phases. The Tourism Department is currently developing over nine acres, which were allocated under the Kasaragod Development Package. Simultaneously, the Forest Department will focus on implementing a range of ecotourism initiatives across its designated land, working closely with local Forest Conservation Committees.
According to Divisional Forest Officer K. Ashraf, 14 hectares of Veermalakunnu fall under the department’s purview, and development will strictly adhere to MoEF guidelines. “The government has earmarked ₹4 lakh per hectare for this endeavor. We’ve put forward a proposal for developing 14 hectares, and ₹36 lakh has already been sanctioned as the initial installment,” Mr. Ashraf stated.
He further explained that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and a comprehensive working plan are actively being crafted. Once fully operational, Veermalakunnu is expected to blossom into a premier ecotourism hub, proudly displaying its unique laterite landscape and vibrant native biodiversity. A key aspect of the project involves replacing existing acacia trees with indigenous and fruit-bearing species. Plans also include establishing inviting walkways and a scenic watchtower. Crucially, strict prohibitions will be in place against any large-scale construction, ensuring the natural integrity of the site. “This project promises to transform the hill into a captivating retreat for both local communities and visitors from afar,” Mr. Ashraf enthused.
Veermalakunnu is already renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty. During August and September, its slopes burst into a magnificent tapestry of flowers, thanks to countless blossoming plants. From various elevated points, guests can soak in panoramic vistas of the serene Neeleswaram river and its iconic bridge.
This versatile destination offers perfect opportunities for delightful family outings, gentle trekking excursions, and even rappelling adventures, firmly establishing it as a must-visit spot for both relaxation and thrill-seeking.
